PHL – Unit Substation FCA

Project Overview

This project involves the architectural assessment and planned relocation of the FCA-1 substation, currently situated in the sub-cellar of Terminal A-East at Philadelphia International Airport. The primary objectives for relocating the substation are to position it above the flood plain and to increase its power capacity to accommodate future demands. Four potential sites were evaluated for this relocation, considering both architectural feasibility and practical constraints.

Design Approach

The architectural design strategy for the new substation includes:

  • Structural Integration: Constructing a new enclosure on the roof of the existing building, ensuring it blends seamlessly with the current architecture while providing the necessary protection and accessibility for the substation.

  • Aesthetic Considerations: The new structure will be designed to complement the architectural style of Terminal A-East, ensuring visual harmony with the existing airport infrastructure.

  • Functional Design: Ensuring that the new substation space is functional and accessible for maintenance, with adequate ventilation and safety measures.
